Fatigue and insomnia that many of us are struggling with are symptoms of imbalance in our bodies. Find out what grounding technique is and how it can help...
"We are bio-electrical beings living on an electrical planet" - Martin Zucker.
The fatigue and insomnia that many of us struggle with are symptoms of imbalance in our bodies.
We have two nervous system departments - sympathetic and parasympathetic. You probably heard of them in school. Our sympathetic nervous system is responsible for our "fight or flight" response. It operates on instinct level. It activates when we feel danger and starts to run a cascade of processes that prepare us for a fast reaction. It begins with the release of cortisol and a pause of all functions that the parasympathetic system is responsible for, like digestion, healing, and other maintenance protocols. The sympathetic nervous system was designed to be activated only 1-3% of the time. The problem is that nowadays, we live in a constant state of "fight or flight," triggered by work emails, hectic schedules, and endless newsfeeds.
Because of the imbalance between active states of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, our bodies start to wear out our mitochondria. Mitochondria is the powerhouse of your body. It produces your weight in ATP molecules (aka energy) every day. When mitochondria start to work less efficiently, you begin to feel fatigued and struggle with insomnia. Some people can also have digestive and weight gain issues as the body holds on to sugars to provide energy for the constant "fight or flight" response state.
"Your body is electrical in nature, right? Did you know that at any given moment, there's an average of a hundred watts of electricity coursing through you? That's more than enough to light up a light bulb. And when you're exerting yourself physically while exercising, you can produce up to two thousand watts of energy or enough to power twenty light bulbs. Whoa!" - Nick Polizzi
So what can be done? There are apparent lifestyle changes like nutrition, exercise, and
stress management, but there is also grounding.
Essentially, the grounding technique is connecting with Earth's electricity by walking outside barefoot. You might think it's nonsense but remember how good you feel after running on the grass with kids or walking on the beach. Just twenty minutes of these activities will lower your blood sugar and cortisol levels, while increasing energy. There have been over 24 recent research studies that found that your body literally recharges. Long term, it can drastically reduce inflammation and pain, improve sleep and blood circulation.
It can be hard to find time to walk outside barefoot every day, especially in urban landscapes. There are inventions for grounding that you can purchase for your home, although we want to challenge you to commit to at least one day a week and see how beneficial this simple self-care technique is for your overall health.
